      Urban Church Plants

Planting and Growing Urban Churches, Ed. by Harvie M. ConnThe book is a series of articles by different writers and is based on statistical research. One of the articles says that research has shown that the primary cause of growth in a new church is how well it matches the community it is trying tor reach. They call it congruence. They list several items that can hinder growth but are not the primary cause of it: Leadership skills (interesting), size of the pool of potential members. the author suggests that far too much importance has been placed on the leadership and far too little on congruence between the church and the area.Another article shows that churches are more likely to grow when, 1. they have younger leadership, 2. ost people have not been members for a long time, 3. they are wealthy, 4. doctrinal orthadoxy on issue such as seven day creation, virgin birth, and the necessity of Christ for salvation.Another article shows that the only churches that tend to grow in neighborhoods in transition are 1. Ethnic churches, 2. multi cultural churches, 3. Multiple mission churches, 4 Regional churches (although rare), and 5. Satellite churches. This book is decidedly conservative evangelical so some of you will have to interpret, but it holds several very priceless pieces of information. One of the things I am beginning to see clearly and painfully is that the people who seem to best understand church planting, world missions, and the Great Commission are the conservative evangelicals. They are not about merely planting churches, but changing cities. I think this was Paul?s mission as well. I am slowly being won over to their point of view. It is not an easy journey but one that I seem to be making bit by bit.
