- Fastracking wrong people into leadership. Make sure that when you get commitments, they know specifically what you're asking them to commit themselves too. About half of the team came from area churches and had no intention of ever worshiping with the new congregation. They looked at the Mission Design Team as just another committee. Beware of this trap! Go to area churches within your denomination (if you're part of one) and ask them for healthy seed families. Get some pulpit time on Sunday morning and make the request. Pray for their congregation while you're there. Have them pray about the opportunity and then listen for God's leading. And clearly communicate to them what you're asking them to commit to. Go to area churches outside your denomination who have a Kingdom mentality and who won't feel threatened by some new "competition," but who rejoice in the fact that God wants to plant another church in the area and make the same pitch to these congregations. Don't be afraid to ask your friends...you've already built the trust-relationships with them...a huge hurdle in this process.
- Utilizing Denominational organization / structure and trying to make it fit a church it was never designed for.
- Not weeding out Vision adjusters instead of trying to "adjust" the vision of the complainers
- Not taking membership seriously enough and letting anyone join
- Not praying smart
- Not going public soon enough
- Spending too much time on "Core group" instead of "Launch team"
- Getting away from evangelism before one realizes it
- Listening to the spiritual people who said "don't worry about numbers...just be faithful."
- Not focusing time, energy, resources on "assimilation"
- Not understanding the vast difference between "seeker targeted / sensitive".
- Not understanding the money issues enough
