When the Contemporary Service Ins't Working
When a church begins a new contemporary worship service and it does not become the largest service in two to four years these are usually the reasons.<dir></dir>
- The overall environment of the church DNA does not match the contemporary service. In other words the contemporary service is sort of an add on to the environment. People are looking for a contemporary service; they are looking for a contemporary church.
- The overall theology of the church is more liberal than conservative. In other words there isn't much discipling making going on. The new service is seen primarily as another program. It's goal is not the transformation of people. Does your worship team gather to pray for those who are not yet there and who will have their lives transformed when they do attend? Do you all pray over the pews/chairs? Is there a spiritual atmosphere among the worship team?
- You aren't developing spiritual leaders who can articulate the meaning of their relationship with Jesus.
- Therefore, the people in the contemporary service aren't inviting their friends. What we have seen is that a contemporary service in the midst of a dead spiritual church doesn't produce much. No one is going to come to it. They have to be brought.
- The contemporary service, as good as it is, it is being done by volunteers, whereas you are paying the people in the real service.
- The church environment has the look and feel of a dead place.
- The service isn't at a 9:30 or 11 am (or so) time slot on Sunday am.
- The hospitality isn't incredible.
