Open Space Technology
Harrison Owen introduced the concept of Open Space Technology. See the book Open Space Technology. A permission giving method of assisting large groups come to a consensus around a real business issue (ministry)
In Owen's experience he finds the following conditions present for an optimum open space experience:
1. There is a real issue of concern - sometimes this is at a crisis point, or it can be a future directional issue.
2. There is a diversity of players - for a good experience there needs to be a collection of opinions and points of view.
3. Complexity of elements - the more complicated the issue, the better.
4. Presence of Passion (conflict) - not only does there need to be a diversity of participants and points of view but also individuals who are so passionate about the issue that they will have conflicting views on how to address it.
5. A decision time of yesterday - Open Space works best when there is enough time pressure to force the group into the feeling of urgency.
