Domain Name

(2006)

1.       Come up with domain names (the name of your site -- www.thewaters.org or www.satpm.com)

2.       Find out if they are already taken (visit http://www.worldnic.com to see)

3.       Decide who will host your site (most likely your local internet server -- not AOL, Worldnet, Sprint) and for how much (I pay $35/month)

4.       Have them reserve your chosen name (do this as quickly as you can, since names go fast)

5.       Decide the concept of your page -- what do you want it to do, say, look like, etc.   (surf the net for ideas and remember the more graphics, the slower the page loads.   For instance, Yahoo loads in 6 seconds on a 28.8 modem, easum.com loads in 106.2 seconds, thewaters.org in 21.84 seconds -- each one dependent on the number and the size of graphics)

6.       Learn HTML and CGI or get someone you can afford to build your webpage

7.       Upload your webpage (or have it uploaded if someone else does it)

8.       Point your browser to http://www.websitegarage.com and do a free "tune-up" to see what problems the site has (it checks load-speed, registration ability, spelling, design, dead links, popularity, and browser compatibility)

9.       Fix the problems or choose which ones you can live with (under no circumstances should you live with spelling or grammar problems and dead links -- it makes you look amaturish)

10.   Go to http:///www.register-it.netscape.com and do a free registration of your website with 16 search engines

11.   Go to yahoo.com, altavista.digital.com, and lycos.com and manually register your site (or pay register-it $40 and they'll register your site with 100 search engines including all the main ones)

12.   Let people know on the Usenet of your new site (go to http://www.dejanews.com to post on the newsnet if your server does not have News services -- go to alt.religion.christian ; alt.christnet ; soc.religion.christian ; alt.bible ; alt.fan.jesus-christ as minimums)

13.   Tell everyone you know about your site -- and email all your friends to let them know and ask them to tell others

14.   Decide whether you're going to advertise off the web; if so do it

15.   Keep an eye on your counter to see how many hits you get (it starts slow -- I used to get 1 or 2 hits a day, 18 months later I'm getting about 100 each week)

16.   Keep your site updated and let people know when you make significant changes

17.   Reregister your site now and again with the main search engines
